Ever wonder what British Columbia’s most profitable industries are? Logging? Fishing? Tourism? Ever think to include marijuana? If you haven’t, think again. No longer a hobby for the stereotypical hippie culture of the ’60s, BC’s illegal marijuana trade industry has evolved into a seemingly unstoppable business giant, dubbed by those involved as ‘The Union’.

Commanding upwards of $7 billion Canadian annually, The Union’s roots stretch far and wide, directly and indirectly affecting all areas of our society. With 65% to 85% of all ‘BC Bud’ being exported to the United States, it’s clear that the BC marijuana trade has become an international issue with consequences that extend far beyond our borders. When there are record profits to be made, who are the players, and when do their motives become questionable?

•Why is marijuana illegal?
•What health risks do we really face?
•Does prohabition work?
•What would happen if we taxed it?
•Medicine, paper, fuel, textiles, food, etc. Are we missing something here?

Follow filmmaker Adam Scorgie as he dives head first into Canada’s most socially acceptable illegal activity. Along the way, Adam demsytifies the underground market and brings to light how such a large industry can function while remaining illegal. By interviewing experts from around the globe, including growers, clippers, police officers, criminalogists, economists, psychologists, medical doctors, politicians and pop culture icons, Scorgie explores the cause and affect nature of the business behind getting high. Nobody’s innocent in this exploration of an industry that may be profiting more by being illegal. Join Adam Scorgie as he unravels the mystery of The Union.

First off this movie was simply amazing. I have shown this movie to many sceptics and many adults that look down upon ‘stoners’ and they have all become more open minded… the goverment had them brainwashed as they have most americans so show this video to everyone you know. oh and by the way i have had several surgeries and medical problems and i have not stepped foot into a doctors office in over 10 years… think about it

It’s not about pot, it’s about why everything is the way it is..

  • the legal drugs, made out to seem okay by our own govt, are the true ” gateway drugs” if there is such a thing. what is a better way to get started in drugs than legally? hmmm. legalize tax and regulate cannabis in california 2010.

    Great movie!
Wish there are more like this so people can learn more about it.
Hi from croatia…I’m going to light one up now!

    fight the lie!!

  • The documentary is really well done. It brings out a lot of information, but information aside, it helps one raise a lot of questions. As they said towards the end, the truth can’t be hidden forever and I do hope we’ll be able to grow our own fuel while balancing out the CO2 levels in the atmosphere with fresh Oxygen, i do hope we could if not eliminate, at least reduce deforestation and further damaging our planet. The power to change is within ourselves and we should change our ways in respect to the laws of nature, not the laws of man. I’m not saying break laws, I’m saying stand up for what you believe in. We have been proven wrong before, and it’s no shame in being wrong, but there should be a great shame in being ignorant to the needs of so many.

Well! if they call hashis a gateway drug, wtf is alcohol? Everybody that have started smoking weed or doing other drugs started with alcohol.

  • great video, didn’t know half of the things seen in it, yet am not even slightly surprised

  • Have heard of this documentary a long time (since it came out I guess) and haven’t watched it til now.
It was very good and pretty much took up all things so it really wouldn’t leave any questions for non-liberals.

Like Joe Rogen(?) said, If you’re a thinker and you cant laugh about this situation, you’re dumb. There will always be ignorant people. I’m not the smartest person in the world and I’ll admit I’ve been predjudice about drugs, wether its heroin or tobacco.
But as you open up your mind and try to think for yourself you’ll see the wrongs and rights, and the most important thing, you’ll get your own opinion about something, not swallowing everything that is told to you by the government etc etc.

And what Carl Sagan told that last doctor gave me goosebumps. Due to cannabis I’ve become interested in our planet, space, stars and time, mainly due to Carl Sagan. He was a smart fellow, and I’m glad I found about him and also everything about the prohibation of cannabis etc.

I’m sorry for the spelling mistakes, from Sweden.
And like we all know, if one country does it others will follow.

I used to believe all that crap about marijuana being bad for you and making doped out like crack or heroin….until i tried it..it’s very sad what the government is doing to this gift of a plant. Now i feel people against it are either dumb or uninformed and just let the government think for them.

Always question authority ..think for yourself!

  • Roll it, poke it, light it and smoke it.
Crumble, stumble, pass it to your flatmate
Pipe some, bong some, use a bit of home grown
sucket, bucket, inhale to get stoned.
weed, need, thai-stick, ganja always duz the trick
Rope, Dope, Mary-Jane, Smoke the shit n get insane
Bogart! Eyes that smart, rolling has become an art
Pass the J to the I so that we all get stoned !
    LEGA-FUKIN-LIZE IT !!

  • Doesn’t the producer of this video sound like a marijuana user?

  • love is liberation, spread the truth for the love of humanity!

that was a very good doc/movie… canada is da best place to live… im glad im canadian….

  • Awesome doc, there’s another one of the same style called ‘American Drug War – The Last White Hope’. Its made by Bill Hicks’ childhood friend. Very interesting stuff about the ‘war on drugs’ in America.

  • fernando 4 years ago

loved the doc! very useful information
marijuana isn’t all a about the smoking :) its a beautiful plant, a powerful medicine that contains a very strong fibre.
a fibre that can create good quality paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics…

why continuing to chop the lungs of our planet?
Huge marijuana crops would solve some problems
