The Union: The Business Behind Getting High
Posted on: June 30, 2010
Ever wonder what British Columbia’s most profitable industries are? Logging? Fishing? Tourism? Ever think to include marijuana? If you haven’t, think again. No longer a hobby for the stereotypical hippie culture of the ’60s, BC’s illegal marijuana trade industry has evolved into a seemingly unstoppable business giant, dubbed by those involved as ‘The Union’.
Commanding upwards of $7 billion Canadian annually, The Union’s roots stretch far and wide, directly and indirectly affecting all areas of our society. With 65% to 85% of all ‘BC Bud’ being exported to the United States, it’s clear that the BC marijuana trade has become an international issue with consequences that extend far beyond our borders. When there are record profits to be made, who are the players, and when do their motives become questionable?
•Why is marijuana illegal?
•What health risks do we really face?
•Does prohabition work?
•What would happen if we taxed it?
•Medicine, paper, fuel, textiles, food, etc. Are we missing something here?
Follow filmmaker Adam Scorgie as he dives head first into Canada’s most socially acceptable illegal activity. Along the way, Adam demsytifies the underground market and brings to light how such a large industry can function while remaining illegal. By interviewing experts from around the globe, including growers, clippers, police officers, criminalogists, economists, psychologists, medical doctors, politicians and pop culture icons, Scorgie explores the cause and affect nature of the business behind getting high. Nobody’s innocent in this exploration of an industry that may be profiting more by being illegal. Join Adam Scorgie as he unravels the mystery of The Union.

The documentary is really well done. It brings out a lot of information, but information aside, it helps one raise a lot of questions. As they said towards the end, the truth can’t be hidden forever and I do hope we’ll be able to grow our own fuel while balancing out the CO2 levels in the atmosphere with fresh Oxygen, i do hope we could if not eliminate, at least reduce deforestation and further damaging our planet. The power to change is within ourselves and we should change our ways in respect to the laws of nature, not the laws of man. I’m not saying break laws, I’m saying stand up for what you believe in. We have been proven wrong before, and it’s no shame in being wrong, but there should be a great shame in being ignorant to the needs of so many.

Have heard of this documentary a long time (since it came out I guess) and haven’t watched it til now.
It was very good and pretty much took up all things so it really wouldn’t leave any questions for non-liberals.
Like Joe Rogen(?) said, If you’re a thinker and you cant laugh about this situation, you’re dumb. There will always be ignorant people. I’m not the smartest person in the world and I’ll admit I’ve been predjudice about drugs, wether its heroin or tobacco.
But as you open up your mind and try to think for yourself you’ll see the wrongs and rights, and the most important thing, you’ll get your own opinion about something, not swallowing everything that is told to you by the government etc etc.
And what Carl Sagan told that last doctor gave me goosebumps. Due to cannabis I’ve become interested in our planet, space, stars and time, mainly due to Carl Sagan. He was a smart fellow, and I’m glad I found about him and also everything about the prohibation of cannabis etc.
I’m sorry for the spelling mistakes, from Sweden.
And like we all know, if one country does it others will follow.

I used to believe all that crap about marijuana being bad for you and making doped out like crack or heroin….until i tried it..it’s very sad what the government is doing to this gift of a plant. Now i feel people against it are either dumb or uninformed and just let the government think for them.
Always question authority ..think for yourself!

Awesome doc, there’s another one of the same style called ‘American Drug War – The Last White Hope’. Its made by Bill Hicks’ childhood friend. Very interesting stuff about the ‘war on drugs’ in America.
July 23rd, 2010 at 04:15
loved the doc! very useful information
its a beautiful plant, a powerful medicine that contains a very strong fibre.
marijuana isn’t all a about the smoking
a fibre that can create good quality paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics…
why continuing to chop the lungs of our planet?
Huge marijuana crops would solve some problems
